Menopause: Associated Sexual Concerns

Loss of estrogen is perhaps the key factor leading to sexual concerns after menopause because it can influence changes in a woman's sexual desire and sexual functioning / response. Menopausal and postmenopausal women often note that they are not so easily aroused and may be less sensitive to touch and stroking, which can result in a reduced interest in sex.

Lower levels of estrogen can also cause a decrease in the blood supply to the vagina. This drop in blood flow can affect vaginal lubrication, making the vagina too dry for a comfortable relationship.

However, a lower estrogen level is not the only cause behind a decrease in libido during and after menopause. There are a number of other factors that can influence a woman's interest in sexual activity and include:

Urinary incontinence (bladder control problems)
Sleep disorders
Depression or anxiety
fatigue
drugs
Other health concerns
